How do I find a job on campus?

A good place to find on-campus jobs is the Office of Student Employment, located in Records Hall on the College Avenue Campus. It's a good idea to bring a resume to the academic and administrative departments that you are interested in working for.

If I am relocating to another part of the country, can Career Services still help?

Yes! We can arrange reciprocal services at most colleges and universities around the country. Contact Richard White, Director of Career Services, at riwhite@rutgers.edu. Include your name, college, major(s), month and date of graduation, your current mailing address, and up to three schools where you would like reciprocity. Dr. White will prepare letters on your behalf and send copies to you. NOTE: New York University and California public universities do not grant reciprocity. Some schools may charge a fee for services.

I am a senior and I haven't done much about planning my future career. How do I decide what I want to do and how to get there?

Our staff of professional counselors is trained to provide personal and individual assistance with these important issues. They are attuned to the stresses that seniors experience as they complete their degree requirements and seek employment or admission to graduate school. Call either office to set up an appointment.

I am a sophomore and I need to declare a major, how can I figure out what to major in and how it relates to a future career?

It is fairly common for first year students and sophomores to be unsure about their choice of majors and future career plans. Contact any Career Services office and schedule an appointment with one of our career counselors. The counselor will explore with you a variety of major and career options that suit your interests, skills, and personality.

I want to major in history, but my parents want me to major in business. They're concerned about future job opportunities with a liberal arts degree. What should I do?

The first step is to set up an appointment with a career counselor ASAP. Bear in mind that academic choices and career choices are not the same. If you're a history major, that doesn't mean that you must become a historian or history teacher. Many employers that recruit at Rutgers are more concerned with skills than one's major. They are looking for strong communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills—skills that your liberal arts degree can help you to develop.

Can I have my graduate school personal statement critiqued?

Contact Dr. Richard White at riwhite@rutgers.edu to set up an appointment to have your personal statement critiqued. Send a draft of your personal statement to Dr. White at least one day prior to the meeting. Meetings will take place at 56 College Avenue.

Does Career Services offer any skill or interest assessments?

All Career Services offices offer skill, interest, and personality instruments. You must meet first with a career counselor to determine your needs. Call to inquire about all instruments.

Do I need to wear a suit for a mock interview?

We recommend that you come for your practice interview dressed professionally. It helps to better simulate an actual interview and we can offer you advice on your business attire.

What is the Alumni Career Network?

The Rutgers University Alumni Career Network is a database of graduates from the Camden, New Brunswick, and Newark campuses who have volunteered to be mentors and share their career experiences with students and other alumni. These individuals have diverse academic backgrounds and represent many career fields. Currently, there are about 1,900 mentors in the database.
