The Interview Day

There are several steps you can take to increase the likelihood of having a successful interview. Read through the information that follows to best prepare yourself before meeting employers.

Before the Interview

  • Research the organization with whom you are interviewing. Learn about it's history, products, competitors, industry, services, etc.
  • Check to see if the company is having an information session the night before the interview.
  • Practice common behavioral interview questions and rehearse your answers.
  • Don't schedule back to back interviews at the Career & Interview Center.
  • Plan your interview outfit and make sure everything is ready for that day.
  • Organize a portfolio to bring along to the interview. This may include work samples, extra copies of your resume, copies of your unofficial transcript, a notepad to take notes after the interview, and a list of references.
  • Call the Career Services office at 56 College Avenue (732-932-7287) if you need to cancel your interview. Review the "Rutgers On-campus Interviewing Code of Ethics" in your Career Services Guide for information on interview cancellations and no showing for interviews.

The Interview Day

  • Plan to wear a professional outfit—first impressions are critical and lasting:
    • Women – wear a suit, pants suit, blazer with skirt or dress, conservative color, no heavy jewelry or perfume.
    • Men – wear a suit, jacket & tie with slacks, conservative color, no heavy cologne of after shave.
    • Do not wear jeans, t-shirts, wrinkled clothes, sneakers or hats.
    • Employers strongly discourage mini skirts, tank/halter/sleeveless tops, low cut or tight fitting shirts, facial or tongue piercings, and visible tattoos.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time.
  • Call the Career and Interview Center at the Busch Campus (732-445-6127, ext. 0) if you will be late for your interview due to traffic, bus problems, etc.
  • Upon arrival at the Career and Interview Center, located in the Busch Campus Center, swipe into our C3M System. Select the company with whom you are scheduled to interview. Please notify the front desk staff if you wait 5 minutes beyond your scheduled interview time.
  • Once the interview is completed thank the interviewer for his/her time and express your appreciation for the opportunity to interview for that organization.
  • Ask the interviewer for a business card for future correspondence.

After the Interview

  • Send the interviewer a thank you email/letter within 48 hours. Express your appreciation again as well as your continued interest in the position.

The Office of Career Services at Rutgers University-New Brunswick offers the following employment services to students and alumni of Rutgers University: CareerKnight (on-campus interviewing; students only), career fairs, online job postings (through Monster), a resume database, internship services and employer information sessions.

Career Services makes every effort to gauge the integrity and professionalism of all employers participating in any of these employment services. However, we are not responsible for the integrity and professionalism of participating employers or for the content of any job posted through Monster or any linked site. Finally, while Career Services encourages employers to maintain professional and ethical recruiting practices and standards, we are not responsible for the hiring or employment practices of any employers that recruit Rutgers students or alumni.

Students and alumni are responsible for researching and assessing the integrity and professionalism of the employers to which they apply and with which they interview. Students and alumni should always be vigilant, responsible and professional when interviewing and accepting employment.

If a student has a problem with any employer, he or she should contact Career Services immediately, and we will take appropriate action with the employer on behalf of the student.
