Opportunities for Majors in Civil
Engineering
Introduction
Engineering
is a profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural
sciences is applied to develop ways to use the materials and forces
of nature economically for the benefit of humanity. At
Rutgers, four-year undergraduate curricula leading to the degree
of Bachelor of Science are offered in the fields of applied sciences,
bioenvironmental, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical and computer,
industrial, and mechanical engineering, and materials science &
engineering. Numerous areas of concentration are available within
these disciplines, such as aerospace, biochemical, environmental,
and packaging engineering.
Civil engineering
is one of the broadest of the engineering disciplines, extending
across many technical specialties. Civil engineers plan, design,
and supervise the construction of facilities essential to modern
life. These facilities vary widely in nature, size, and scope and
include space satellites and launching facilities, offshore structures,
bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, transit systems, dams, airports,
harbors, water supply and wastewater treatment plants. Civil engineers
work in diversified areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical
engineering, water resources and environmental engineering, transportation
engineering, ocean and coastal engineering, and construction engineering.
