Opportunities for Majors in Math/Statistics
Introduction
Mathematics
involves the study of numerical calculations, problem solving,
logic, quantitative patterns, and more. Students pursuing a
math major take a variety of courses in the areas of algebra,
geometry, calculus, mathematical reasoning, and differential
equations. The mathematics program at Rutgers offers several
specializations, including standard, teaching, computer-oriented,
statistics-mathematics, and bio-mathematics programs.
Statistics focuses on gathering and analyzing information and
numerical data. Students studying statistics will complete coursework
in areas such as probability, statistical analysis, regression
methods, sampling, experimental design, and multivariate analysis.
Students can pursue a statistics major or a joint statistics-mathematics
major.
You will find there are a variety of choices for math and statistics
majors. However, many careers do not require a specific major
but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments.
Regardless of your career plans, it is important to develop
your marketability through internships, responsible work experience,
good grades and participation in college activities.
