Electronic Résumé Action Plan

Introduction

The computer age has brought about a new set of standards and guidelines for writing your résumé. More and more companies are reviewing résumés online and scanning them into their applicant tracking systems. As a result, you should develop an "electronic" résumé to maximize your exposure and take full advantage of the internet as a job search tool.

Electronic résumés are stripped down, plain text versions of your résumé, designed to be sent to employers via e-mail.

Basic Tips for Writing Your Electronic Résumé

  • Don't use tabs, bullets, italics or underlining.
  • Limit each line to 65 characters, including spaces and commas.
  • Left justify your electronic résumé.
  • Keep your résumé in plain text (Courier is recommended); remember, you don't have a choice of font on the receiving end.
  • Use asterisks instead of bullets.
  • Create your electronic résumé in Notepad; this will enable you to copy and paste your résumé onto the internet and send it via e-mail.
