Government Careers Action Plan
- Explore your interests, skills, and values and how they relate to Rutgers University majors and general career options through the Rutgers Online Career Planning Site. A brief introductory session with a career counselor is required.
- Begin your research by visiting any of the Career Resource Centers at the Busch or College Avenue offices.You will find employer directories, career information books, and brochures describing specific agencies.
- Use the online Alumni Career Network to contact Rutgers alumni in your major or fields of interest.
- Review our "Federal Government Careers" web page and find links to sites that explain government career paths that relate to different college majors.
- Browse through the directory entitled "Career America," located in each Career Resource Center. The directory contains information on applying for federal jobs, federal pay scales, internships, and affirmative action programs.
- Log on to two key websites sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. For full-time jobs go to: http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/. For internships go to: http://www.studentjobs.gov/.
- Attend the Non-Profit and Government Career Day on campus in April.
- Purchase copies of "Job Choices," which lists government and private sector job vacancies. Volumes 1, 2 and 3 are available at Career Services.
- For online jobs earmarked for Rutgers students and alumni, go to CareerKnight
- Visit the Federal Employment Information Center in Newark. The center provides job information, application forms and referrals to testing sites. The Newark area office is in the Rodino Federal Building, 970 Broad Street, Newark.
- For New Jersey state, county and municipal vacancies, call (609) 292-8668 for updated job information, or visit New Jersey's website at http://www.state.nj.us/csc/. Bulletins are no longer published monthly.

You can pursue federal job opportunities via the internet or phone. 97% of federal job seekers use the internet.

Automated Telephone System
For job information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, call the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) automated telephone system at (478) 757-3000, or with a computer modem dial (478) 757-3100 for job information from an OPM electronic bulletin board. You can also reach the board through the internet (Telnet only) at http://fjob.mail.opm.gov/.

Access federal job information via the internet. Go to http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/. This site includes over 18,000 job openings, employment facts, email job notifications, a résumé builder, an online application, and other job links.

This is a computer-based system available at Federal Employment Information Centers. Includes current worldwide jobs. Application packages are sent to you.

Use specialized directories in the employer directory section at any Career Services resource center.
Internships
- Log on to http://www.studentjobs.gov/. This site contains thousands of internship opportunities, information on federal agencies, and features that enable you to create a résumé and personal profile.
- Visit any Career Resource Center to view the "Presidential Management Intern" video.
- Visit any office of Career Services for information on the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Minority Internship Program. Note: The deadline for the following summer is October 1.
- Learn about the Rutgers-in-Washington Program.
