Career Opportunities for Majors in Chemical Engineering

Introduction

Engineering is a profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences is applied to develop ways to use the materials and forces of nature economically for the benefit of humanity.

At Rutgers, four-year undergraduate curricula leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science are offered in the fields of applied sciences, bioenvironmental, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical and computer, industrial, and mechanical engineering, and materials science & engineering. Numerous areas of concentration are available within these disciplines, such as aerospace, biochemical, environmental, and packaging engineering. The Dept. of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers offers degrees at the BS, MS and PhD levels.

In Chemical Engineering, students apply principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, environmental engineering, and health and safety sciences to the analysis, development, design, and automatic control of processes in which matter is physically or chemically transformed, separated, and/or transported. A biochemical engineering option is available which focuses on biological processes that require the integration of biochemistry, microbiology, and applied immunotechnology with other basic sciences. Chemical and biochemical engineers also produce products such as chemicals, polymers and pharmaceuticals for society at large.
