1. Editor's Note

This issue marks the four-year anniversary of our name change from ALANA News to Diversity Career News. The change reflected the rapidly increasing usage of the word "diversity"-both the concept and the hiring practices-on campus and in the workplace. At Career Services we want to emphasize our philosophy that diversity touches everyone within the Rutgers community and society at large. With employers emphasizing multicultural teamwork more than ever, your commitment to diversity and experience in diverse work settings are more important than ever.

While our focus remains on ALANA (African American, Latino, Asian and Native American) students, we also hope to address career issues pertinent to gay and lesbian students, students with disabilities, and women.

Editor, Diversity Career News

2. Diversity Employer Prospect Lists
You've heard the "talk" before from plenty of employers: "We are very committed to hiring people of color and fostering a diverse workplace." But which employers actually "walk the walk?"-that is, all the way to New Brunswick! Career Services has compiled a list of over 170 employers that have attended our own New Jersey Diversity Career Day at least once during the past four years. Among the employers are some of America's best-known companies and government agencies: ADP, Cendant, Chubb, Cintas, Eli Lilly, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Ernst & Young, Foot Locker, IBM, IRS, Johnson & Johnson, L'Oreal USA, Merrill Lynch, New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services, Peace Corps, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Sherwin Williams, Teach for America, UPS, U.S. Department of State and many others.

To access the list, log on to http://careerservices.rutgers.edu; click on "Students"; click on "ALANA Students"; and click on "Diversity Employer Contact List." You also will find links to employer websites for more information and application procedures.

Also check out the following prospect list on the ALANA Students page:

3. New Jersey Diversity Career Day-February 18

The place to be on Friday, February 18 is the Rutgers Student Center for the annual New Jersey Diversity Career Day. We hope you will make some connections with several of the 50 employers expected to attend.

Place: Rutgers Student Center
Time: 10:00-3:00
Bring: Copies of your resume
Dress: Business attire

Be Prepared to: Deliver a one-minute "commercial" for yourself-your major, previous work experience and career interests (see item #4 below).

4. Your "60 Second" Commercial

What do you say when you walk up to a table at a career day and introduce yourself to an employer? How do you create a positive and lasting impression? The answer is to prepare a brief "commercial" about yourself. You should touch on four key elements that define who you are and where you're heading: your major, work experience, skills, and your interest in the employer.

Here's a sample, adapted from our 2004-2005 Career Services Guide:

"Hello, my name is _______. I am currently a junior at Rutgers, majoring in economics. I am working as a supervisor at Rutgers Campus Information Services, and this has enhanced my communication, management and website skills. I am very interested in ______ Company, especially the customer support, marketing or website development areas."

For more information on developing your 60-second commercial, stop by any office of Career Services to pick up our Career Services Guide. See page 28. Good luck in putting your commercial to work at upcoming spring career days!
