Employer's Guide to Engineering Co-op

What is Cooperative Education?
Cooperative Education (Co-op) is an opportunity for undergraduate students to apply academic preparation to "real world" situations in industry. Co-op employers offer valuable experience to a student and gain significant work contributions in the process.

Who is eligible to participate?
Engineering students who are in their junior or senior year that have completed more than 80 credits and have at least a 2.5 GPA are eligible to participate in the co-op program.

How does the co-op program work?
Employers can post co-op positions on "InterviewTRAK", an Internet based recruiting system and receive resumes directly from students. Students can be interviewed on campus or at the company site.

How do co-ops differ from internships?
Co-op assignments are paid full-time positions for a duration of six months (January-June or July-December). Internships are typically part-time during the academic year or full-time during the summer months.

Why should your organization participate?

A source of innovation - Rutgers University co-op students bring a high-level skill set that lead to significant contributions to the employer.

Improved employee retention and lower recruitment costs - When hired as full-time employees after graduation, co-op students generally remain with initial employers longer than new entry-level employees.

An opportunity to become involved with Rutgers University in the educational process - Build public relations for mutual benefit and make a significant contribution to the co-op student's education.

What do we expect from the employer?

Develop an accurate job description and designate an immediate supervisor.

Provision of a safe work environment that is conducive to learning.

Provide compensation for the co-op student.

Inform Career Services of any job offers and acceptances.
