Career Opportunities for Majors in Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies

Introduction

The Department of Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies offers an interdisciplinary program of studies that examines the diverse political, social, and cultural histories of the Spanish-speaking societies of the Caribbean, as well as those of Latino communities in the United States. The courses examine the historical background, the migration experience, and the reformulation of identities in their racial, class, cultural and gender dimension.

Students are exposed to a wide range of perspectives drawn from the social sciences and the humanities. As a versatile major, it helps develop content knowledge about the historical, political, cultural and social dimensions of the Caribbean and Latino communities in the United States. The curriculum fosters valuable skills and competencies in critical thinking and analysis, research, oral and written presentations, and intercultural understanding.

The Department of Latino and Hispanic Caribbean Studies works closely with other departments to foster a more comprehensive learning experience for its students. Students are strongly advised to double major whenever possible, and the faculty works closely with students who wish to pursue individual programs of study. Academic and cultural activities are scheduled regularly to supplement and enrich the classroom experience. The department's interdisciplinary structure supports collaborative research and a coordinated and coherent curriculum that draws from diverse perspectives.

Your major is only one of many variables to be considered when developing your career plans. Many careers do not require a specific major, but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, service-learning, related work experience, good grades and involvement in college activities.
